Species 3. Burhinus grallarius.
Bush Stone-curlew.
Estimated Numbers
~10,000 remain.
The Challenge
The challenge for humanity to save the Bush Stone-Curlew from extinction involves addressing habitat loss, predation by introduced species, and changes in land use that disrupt its natural environment. This unique bird relies on open grasslands and sparse woodlands for nesting and foraging, but urbanization, agriculture, and land clearing have significantly reduced its habitat. Additionally, increased predation from feral cats and foxes poses a major threat to its population.
About the work
— Bush Stone-curlew…
…features a multipaned display of a stylized Bush Stone-curlew making a nesting site. When interrupted the bird freezes, mimicking its real flight/fight response. Human engagement causes it to eventually disappear form the landscape and only the human silhouette remains until you exit the habitat, and it is able to return and come back to it’s nesting site.
The team is currently writing up this into an academic paper and more details will appear here soon.
