The Challenge
The challenge for humanity to save the Large-eared Pied Bat from extinction centers on addressing habitat degradation, climate change, and the loss of roosting sites, particularly in its limited range across Australia. This bat species relies on specific types of forest and woodland habitats, which have been fragmented by urban development, agriculture, and logging, severely impacting their food sources and breeding grounds. Conservation efforts must prioritize habitat protection and restoration, as well as the establishment of artificial roosts to support their populations.
About the work
— Large-eared Pied Bat
…features an interactive cave, carved into the space as a long/deep corridor. When un-interrupted the bat makes occasional locational audio sounds positioning itself in the space. When the cave is interacted with the work begins to make distress calls, mimicking the fight/flight behavior of the species circling you until you leave its environment.
The team is currently writing up this into an academic paper and more details will appear here soon.
